The first half started with USA actually being the brighter of the two sides in World Cup 2022 last-16 tie against Netherlands.
Christian Pulisic could have opened the scoring just a couple of minutes into the match, denied by Andries Noppert after firing the ball over the Dutch defence.
But the Netherlands responded with a goal, thanks to Dumfries’s hard-work from the right flank. Dumfries cut the ball back in after one-two touch passes and found Memphis Depay, who swept home with no mistakes.
The Barcelona man scored his 43rd international goal for the Netherlands, making him the player with the outright second most goals for Oranje, behind Robin van Persie (50).
With seconds left before the break, it’s another identical set up with Dumfries, again, pulled a ball back to almost the same spot, this time it was Daley Blind to find the far corner and doubled the lead for Netherlands.
After the restart, USA saw their chances gone by, with Tim Ream’s effort cleared off the line before they eventually pulled one back (1-2), thanks to substitute Haji Wright.
Wright flicked the ball from the near post after meeting Pulisic’s low cross, whether it was on purpose or not, that was sensational goal from the American striker.
But USA’s hope for a comeback ended only moments after it was lighted up when Dumfries guided a left foot volley into the net from Blind’s cross.

What’s next?
Netherlands also learned their next opponent in the quarterfinals: Argentina, who beat Australia in the second last-16 tie.
The highly expected game will be taking place on 10th of December.
